Who deserves Goldmine’s vote to join the Rock Hall in 2012?

2011 Rock Hall Ballot

By Susan Sliwicki

It’s that time of year again: Goldmine gets to cast its official vote with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the next year’s inductees.

So who should get Goldmine’s endorsement this year? That, dear voters, is all up to you. While we can’t promise that Goldmine’s picks will be the same as the artists who make the Rock Hall’s cut for induction, we can promise that our vote will be based solely on what you, the fans, feel is right. Goldmine is one of roughly 600 final voters to receive ballots.

In a recent online poll, we asked voters to share which five of the 15 nominated acts they felt most deserved to be inducted in 2011. Now, we’re going to hold a “run-off” vote, which narrows the field to the Top 10 vote-getters from Round One. (Voters can pick up to three acts in this round of voting.)

Here are the candidates who remain in Goldmine’s vote-off: Donovan, Donna Summer, Freddie King, Guns N’ Roses, Heart, Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, Laura Nyro, The Small Faces/The Faces, The Spinners and War. Be sure to cast your vote on the poll shown on this page!

We’ll also be featuring brief biographies of all 15 of this year’s field of nominees, courtesy of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, so be sure to watch for those, too.

  1. Pardon me while I veer off-topic for a moment, but when will the RRHOF reconize Freddy Cannon?! He was on ‘American Bandstand’ 110 times. That’s gotta count for something.

  2. As the Hall continues to ignore the Moody Blues (one of only two surviving British Invasion bands still in existence and touring), I will continue to ignore the so-called Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

  3. HOW SAD THAT THIS BUNCH OF JERKS, AR SO MISCONNECTD, TO THE MUSIC. THERE ARE SO MUCH THEY HAVE MISSED ,FOR EXAMPLE. RICHARD BARRET. JOHNNY MASTRO. JOYCE RECORDS. THE PARGONS AN JESTERS. THE MANNY EARLY BIRD GROUPS, WHO WITH OUT THERE ,VISION NO MUSIC WOULD HAVE BEEN, IT SEEMS THEY JUST DONT KNOW WHAT ROCK AN ROLL MUSIC WAS.IN CLOSING ,ASS.WIPES, THEY ARE TO CALL THEM SELF THE ROCK AN ROLL HALL OF FAME.ARE THEY FROM ANOUTHER PLANET. JERKS.OR JUST CALL IT THE CD HALL OF FAME.

  4. There are lots of artists who should be in the RRHOF who are not on this year’s nominated list. So, I say, let’s just focus on the list we have. I would love to see Donna Summer in there. I love Heart to. In comparison, Heart is mainly a rock band, but they have also put out what has been regarded as pop songs. They are known for rock and pop songs. Donna Summer is mainly known as a disco artist. Well, disco is still here, but it’s called dance. So, she’s known as a dance artist as well. However, Donna is known for contributing to the genres of pop, rock, dance, r&b, as well as other genres. If Heart is known for more than one genre (including rock) and Donna is known for even more genres (including rock), I say put her in. Isn’t Madonna in already? Why put Madonna in before some others, including Donna Summer and Heart, for that matter. Madonna is less rock than both Heart and Donna Summer. I would really like to know, with certainty, how the final choices for induction are included. As it stand, the RRHOF is obviously not just about artists who are MAINLY rock, which I thnk is good because rock has influenced other genres. You can see that in Donna Summer’s music catalougue. She was in rock band early in her career. Put Donna Summer in, please. Heart too.

  5. Despite all the other slights including the omission of Canadian acts, Rush, The Guess Who and Ian Tyson as a songwriter-what about DICK DALE??? His list of exploits goes on and on and he still tours in his 70′s and rocks the house every night. DM.

  6. Linda Ronstadt whether you like her or not, is definately woven into the fabric of the American music story and needs to be honored as such.

  7. Donna Summer is leading your poll… You have to be kidding???????? What’s up, Goldmine readers?

  8. Regardless of what anyone feels about this year’s nominees, these are the only options we have been offered. Goldmine wants its ballot to be cast in the voice of the readers. We realize that symbolic gesture may not be enough to get certain artists inducted or to keep others out, but it’s what we can do. If you want Goldmine’s votes to go to a certain artist, be sure to cast your online ballot today, and ask your friends to do the same. Voting will be open until 11:59 p.m. Nov. 29. Goldmine will mark the top five vote-getters from this poll on the ballot, then mail it to the Rock Hall to ensure it arrives on Dec. 5 in time to be counted.

  9. Remember what happened in 2011? All the inductees were artists from the 60s-70s: Darlene Love, Neil Diamond, Alice Cooper, Leon Russell, Tom Waits, Dr. John. Expect that trend to continue in 2012 with the voters voting for their peers, but with one exception. Remember what happened in 2009? Metallica, an 80s-90s metal act was inducted. Keeping all that in mind, here is my final prediction followed by more reasons why, but I’m only sure on 4 of the 5 inductees:

    Thinking like the Rock Hall…

THE 2012 ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME

    01. The Small Faces / The Faces
    02. Heart
    03. Guns N’ Roses
    04. Freddie King
    05. War or Donovan or Laura Nyro or Donna Summer or The Spinners

    MY REASONS:

    01. THE SMALL FACES / THE FACES

A lot of star power here! Big names with lots of big name friends who will be voting for them! Steve Marriott will finally be inducted, and Ronnie Wood and Rod Stewart will get second inductions. Hopefully Rod Stewart will attend this time. He missed his first induction in 1994 because an earthquake damaged his house and he had to tend to that.

Is it possible that maybe the Rock Hall nominated them as The Small Faces/The Faces, but they will induct them separately, and we’ll have 6 instead of 5 inductees next year? It could be what the Rock Hall’s plan is. I’m going to email them and tell them to do it that way. If they nominated Wanda Jackson in the main performers category and then inducted her as an early influence, I think they could nominate The Small Faces/The Faces together and then induct them separately. Ian McLagan, Ronnie Lane, Kenney Jones will join Stephen Stills as the only inductees to be inducted twice in the same year. We’ll get two separate induction speeches and two performances.

    02. HEART

Heart was interviewed by the Rock Hall this year. Out of all the women nominated this year (Heart, Joan Jett, Chaka Khan, Donna Summer, Laura Nyro), only Heart and Joan Jett are Rock And Roll. Heart came first and they should be inducted first. Plus, Joan Jett wasn’t really that big. Also, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts shouldn’t be inducted before all the artists they have covered: The Arrows, Tommy James and the Shondells, and Gary Glitter.

    03. GUNS N’ ROSES

Out of all the 80s-90s all-male Rock acts nominated this year (Guns N’ Roses, Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Cure), Guns N’ Roses are the biggest, the best, and the most respected by their predecessors. Members of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Cream, The Yardbirds, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, Queen, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Metallica, and many others will be voting for Guns N’ Roses (this year’s Metallica). Bon Jovi they are not! The Rock Hall voters will continue to ignore the Beastie Boys and the Red Hot Chili Peppers this year.

    04. FREDDIE KING

Legendary Blues-Rock guitarist. Need I say more? All inducted guitarists will be voting for him; B.B. King and Eric Clapton included. He is a shoe-in. Chuck Willis and Joe Tex he is not. Elton John mentioned Freddie King in his induction speech for Leon Russell earlier this year. Leon Russell worked with Freddie King. Leon Russell signed Freddie King to his Shelter Records late in his career.

    05. War or Donovan or Laura Nyro or Donna Summer or The Spinners

A second induction for Eric Burdon? Two singer/songwriters, Disco, and an R&B group. I don’t know what will happen here!

    A SIDE NOTE:

Three connections to Elton John and Bernie Taupin on the ballot this year:

Heart, Guns N’ Roses, The Small Faces/The Faces (Rod Stewart)

Heart are known to be fans of Elton John and Bernie Taupin. They have mentioned it numerous times. Most recently, Ann Wilson’s blog on the Rock Hall site. Heart recorded and scored a number one hit in 1985-1986 with the song These Dreams, written by Bernie Taupin and Martin Page.

Guns N’ Roses are also known as Elton John and Bernie Taupin fans. Axl Rose gave the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction speech for Elton John in 1994. Elton John and Axl Rose appeared together in concert numerous times in the 90s: Freddie Mercury (Queen) tribute concert and MTV music awards.

Rod Stewart has recorded songs with lyrics by Bernie Taupin. Rod Stewart and Elton John were both inducted in 1994. Alice Cooper and Leon Russell, who have also recorded songs with lyrics by Bernie Taupin, were both inducted in 2011. Maybe we’ll see Rod Stewart inducted again in 2012, as well as Heart.

All this is leading me to believe that Bernie Taupin will be inducted in 2012, along with other writers in the non-performers category.

NON-PERFORMER CANDIDATES FOR INDUCTION INTO THE ROCK HALL

Cosimo Matassa, Willie Mitchell, Bernie Lowe, Tom Dowd, John Simon, Arif Mardin, Phil Ramone, Quincy Jones, Richard Barrett, Robert Blackwell, Bob Crewe, David Porter, Bernie Taupin, David Foster, Jim Steinman, Carole Bayer Sager, Diane Warren, Wolfman Jack, Casey Kasem

    Kal Mann and Dave Appell
    Bert Berns and Jerry Ragovoy
    Norman Whitfield and Barret Strong
    Burt Bacharach and Hal David
    Henry Cosby and Sylvia Moy
    Thom Bell and Linda Creed
    Boudleaux and Felice Bryant
    Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson

  10. what’s up how come the monkees are not again these motherfuckers are stupid put them in

  11. there are so many people and groups from the 50′s and 60′s that have been ignored…without this foundation NONE of these people or groups would have existed, it wasnt just elvis.

  12. Hall and Oates will forever, and always shall be, my only vote. It’s a shame they’re not in.

  13. the hall of fame exists primarily to recognize those artists who were considered groundbreakers in their chosen genre of music. donovan in this case gets my number one vote, as it was the imagery of his music and lyrics that set the tone for both psychedelia and for the era we’ve come to know as “the summer of love”. groups like the hollies and the dave clark five emulated, or rather, paid homage, to donovan in their own ways with songs they released during this period.
my second choice was donna summer. without her, disco probably wouldn’t have continued as long as it did (for good or bad, it’s moot). her songs were integral to the genre and she went from strengthy to strength with each recording released by her.
my one indulgence, though, is laura nyro. granted there are others far more deserving, but i fing “wedding bell blues” irresistable.
hall and oates? i can’t think of them as trendsetters. we’ve already got the righteous brothers in the hall, why do we need their clone there, too? put the moodies in long before h&o, please!!

  14. DONNA SUMMER….no question. Haven’t we all danced at some point in our lives? No one pioneering dance artist has worked with the likes of Springsteen, Gene Simmons, and Quincy Jones and had staying power enough to emerge from the disco genre, and highly respected the way Donna Summer has. She even won Grammy’s first best female rock award the year it was created. It is time to see Donna Summer inducted.

  15. Not only does Donna Summer deserve the induction, the Rock Hall owes her a huge apology for taking so long !

  16. Donna Summer has proven her rock and roll talents. Go see her in concert and you’ll see. Still one of the best voices going.

  17. First off… Patsy, Yes… Donna Summer is leading the poll. Donna is NOT just disco and dance. Shes a versatile performer. She is a writter unlike most of the artist who are on the poll. Shes wriiten some of the best Rock, R&B, Country, Spiritual and Dance songs out there. She wrote a #1 hit single for Dolly Parton back in 1981 She was THE first femaile to receive a Grammy for Best ROCK song, “Hot Stuff” Her hard ass rock flavor she added to Bruce Springsteen’s Protection is AMAZING. In fact, that song was written for her by Bruce. Shes the ONLY artist to date to have three (3) Triple Platinum number 1 albums back to back. She wrote or co-wrote her biggest hits. She can sing any genre effortlessly. Without Donna there would not be a Madonna, Whitney, Janet, Lady Gaga and Dance music today would not be the same without her. Do some research before you disprove her lead.

Donna Summer is most deserving of this. Its a shame she wasnt already. Donna’s contribution to ‘Music” goes without saying… She is GENIOUS!! Forget disco for a moment which was only four years of her career. Listen to The Bad Girls album, The Wanderer, Self titled, Donna Summer, She Works Hard For The Money. AND tell me shes not rock. Just those four albums alone are incredible works. I vote Donna Summer.

Oh…. By the way…. She’s still kicking ass today. Where’s all the others? Last year she received her 26th #1 on Billboard…. Over and out!!

  18. Donna Summer. She is not about dance music but also a wide array of styles. Rock, country, ballad, R&B, you name it, she did it.

  19. DONNA SUMMER IS ONLY ONE OF THE FEW ARTISTS WHO CAN SING ANY CATEGORY AND ROCK WAS ONE.. SHE WAS THE FIRST WOMAN TO RECEIVED A GRAMMY FOR HER SONG “HOT STUFF” A ROCK SONG AND FOLLOWED WAS ALSO THREE ALBUMS WERE ROCK AND WITH MANY ROCK NOMINATION AT THE GRAMMY. DONNA SUMMER IS ONE THE THE GREATEST VOICE OF ALL TIME.. WHY DID MADONNA GET IN? IT PUZZLE ME AND SHE NEVER EVEN EVER SONG A ROCK SONG.. DONNA SUMMER MAY BE THE QUEEN OF DISCO WHICH IS CALL DANCE MUSIC TODAY.. SHE ROCKS. BEST WISHES TO DONNA SUMMER

  20. Donna Summer is well known for her massive pop hits around 70′s & 80′s. She was the very first person who won the Pop-Rock Grammy back in 1979. Donna posses 4 more grammies in 4 different music categories. She’s been working with big names such as Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen & among others rock musicians. Just review her music catalog away from her biggest hits and discover the variety of music that she has been deliver all these years. Moreover, she has been performing around the world for over 30 years ! So great… Madonna was inducted… Donna Summer should been there way before that !

  21. I hope Donna makes it in. She really has such a strong rock presence in so much of her material. Plus, she has been so influential in music overall—a highly underrated singer. It’s Summertime!

  22. DONNA SUMMER MUST BE INDUCTED IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME ON 2012, ALTHOUGH FOR MANY PEOPLE SHE’S BEEN KNOWN AS THE QUEEN OF DISCO, ON THE OTHER HAND HER GLOBAL INFLUENCE IN MUSIC CAN´T BE DENIED, THE REALM OF MUSIC IS HER TERRITORY. SHE FIRST STARTED AS A VOCALIST IN A ROCK BAND “THE CROW” AT 19 YEARS OLD, CONTINUED HER CARREER IN FAMOUS ROCK OPERA PRODUCTIONS IN EUROPE, DONNAS HAS SCORED IN THE FORMAT OF ROCK VARIOUS TOP TEN HITS, TO NAME A FEW; HOT STUFF, THE WANDERER, COLD LOVE, ROMEO, SHE WORKS HARD FOR THE MONEY, HER MUSIC IS INFLUENCED BY ROCK AND SHE HAS INFLUENCED AND ENRICHED GLOBAL MUSIC IN MANY WAYS, 2012 MUST BE DONNA’S YEAR.

  23. I completely agree with Brian. Donna is a multi-talented artist. She has sing from disco to rock and them some. “Donna Summer has proven her rock and roll talents. Go see her in concert and you’ll see. Still one of the best voices going.”

  24. Rock and roll is an attitude rather than a clear-cut music format, and Donna Summer really has a rock’n'roll attitude with her soulful voice and pioneering fusion of electronic music, R&B, pop and sex. Her music has passed the test of time. Please, put her in.

  25. Donna Summer is an internationally known singer-songwriter whose music has earned five Grammy Awards, three consecutive number one PLATINUM ALBUMS ( Donna is the only artist, male or female, ever to have accomplished this, eleven GOLD ALBUMS ,FOUR NUMBER ONE SINGLES, 2 PLATINUM SINGLES….. Just considered the VOICE!!! She deserves to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. My vote is for Donna. She’s still Hot Stuff!!! From the 70′s to 2011 Donna rocks!!!! From Michael R Arbery a fan forever.

  26. I agree with every Donna commit she is the best ever for many catagorys and spans one of the largest time frames. If I wasn’t clear enough I vote for and love, Donna Summer!

  27. Donna is just simply the BEST!! She is the FIRST WOMAN to win a GRAMMY for BEST ROCK song in 1979 for HOT STUFF. THE FIRST!!!!

  28. NOMINATED FOUR TIMES DONNA SUMMER HAS MY VOTE AND DESERVES TO BE INDUCTED IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME.ALTHOUGH I PREFER HER DISCO STUFF I ADMIT THAT SHE IS VERSATILE MORE THAN ANY OTHER IN THE LIST THIS YEAR.SHE IS NOT ONLY THE DISCO QUEEN BUT ALSO THE BEST FEMALE VOICE OF THE POP ERA THE LAST 4 DECADES.

  29. Donna Summer is going into the Hall this year. Period. Adding to the numerous comments supporting her nomination, I’d like to add a little tidbit that blew me away the first time I heard Donna share the story. Her hit “Dim All The Lights” was a song she had originally written for Rod Stewart. If you saw her VH1 special, she tells the story about writing the song for Rod. She then does something truly transcendent. She sings the song as though Rod Stewart were singing it. I’m telling you it IS Rod singing. I get chills every time I hear her “Rod” version of the song. Any Donna doubters simply need to hear her sing that version, and afterwards, they will recognize how clueless they were in their prior opinion. It’s that stunning. Don’t believe me? Listen to it. That’s all it will take.

  30. It’s really sad there are many talented musicians out there, but what intrigues me is this is The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame….not the Disco Hall of Fame not the Rap Hall of Fame so who should be in this so called Rock and Roll Hall of Fame???? Rockers????? Heart deserves to be inducted into RRHOF and my choice that’s not on there and should be is The Cars! Really get some Rock and Roll musicians on the poll and let the public vote!!!

  31. HEART should be there, should have been there 10 years ago! This is a band, unlike any other rock band out there. This band has gone through many changes and challenges, have overcome them all. They, along with Def Leppard, carried the #1 tour spot for 2011! They continue to gain hundreds of thousands of new fans every year! There is no doubt that Ann Wilson can sing anything she wants and still run circles around every other nominee on this list! Roger Fisher, he gave Heart that distinctive sound, all their own, and is about to release an entire project with his signature sound. These people, the original members, are still working their asses off and deserve to be acknowledged for it!

    Ann Wilson
    Nancy Wilson
    Howard Leese
    Roger Fisher and Michael Fisher
    Steven Fossen
    Michael Derosier

    THERE’S YOUR LINE-UP!

  32. With all due respect to Joan Jett, whom I love, but she almost never does her own music. Guns and Roses, primarily Axl Rose, has no respect for their fans. Chaka Khan and Donna Summer are in the totally wrong genre of music to be on this list. If Heart has to wait way past their due date to get in, then the RHCP should as well, they are way too young to be here yet. The Beastie Boys are rap music, also not rock music………Can I make this any clearer???

  33. Finally HEART is getting the recognition they deserve. Ann and Nancy have been rocking since the 70′s and continue strong to this very day. Not many can match Ann’s vocals and Nancy’s guitar licks although Craig Bartock is great. RRHOF will get this one right for sure. I wonder if past band members will be present as they contributed quite a bit. BTW, what does Donna Summer have to do with rock n roll? She’s a disco queen???

  34. Totally agree with Cathy. This is the ROCK hall of fame. Donna Summer is talented, no doubt about it. Her songs were catchy and great, no doubt about it. But they were barely a crossover to rock music. Her songs revolutionized dance and disco music, not rock.

Joan Jett and Linda Ronstadt and Anne Wilson are just a few examples of female rock vocalists who deserve the Rock Hall entry before Donna Summer does.

Cmon! More votes for Jett and Heart! And let’s hope Linda gets on the ballot soon.

  35. If Abba & Madonna are inducted already without a single rock song recorded. Donna Summer must be in this time. Donna has recorded Rock songs such as ‘Protection’ (Self tittle, Quincy Jones Album ) ‘ Highway runner & Let me alone ‘ ( I’m Rainbow ) , ‘ He’s a Rebel’ Grammy nominated song , album She works hard for the money . another song ‘ Fame’ from 2008 album Crayons . ‘ Hot Stuff ‘ Grammy award for best Pop Rock song . Listen all this songs in Amazon.com then we talk !

  36. If Donna Summer’s Hot Stuff, The Wanderer and She Works Hard For The Money (just to cite a few know hits) are not rock and roll, then the Rollings Stones and the Beatles aren’t rock’n'roll either.

  37. Before she was labeled Queen of Disco and The Queen of Dance, Donna Summer was called The Queen of Sex Rock. And that she was! She was a naughty, steamy rocker that influenced everyone from Rod Stewart to Blondie, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, New Order, Prince, Micheal Jackson and so many more. Hell, Jackson’s Beat It owes everything to Ms. Summer’s Cold Love and other rock tracks.

  38. I think people lose sight on what the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is supposed to be about. The whole purpose is to inducted artists that have changed the face of music, not because they sing rock music. With that said i feel Donna Summer should be inducted first. She has contributed alot to the various music styles. She was the drivng force behind disco and dance while also experimenting with her sound adding popularity to styles such as pop-rock and even R&B rock. For an artist that has being performing for 40 some years and her voice is still the same she really needs to be inducted in a hurry before she she’s gone. I also feel like this is her time, because shes been overlooked like 4 time.

  39. WTF again No KISS, RUSH, Grand Funk Railroad, But we get Donna Summers? The Spinners, and Laura Nyro ????? Please tell me what part of the title ROCK N ROLL don’t you people understand, Cause of all this stupidity of these so call experts, I will never spend a dime to even go to this Hall of Shame. You need to change the name Cause you might be very close to being sue for False Advertising, The Rock N Roll Hall of Shame, Might as well call it Rolling Stone Magazines favorites Hall of Fame. cause that’s what it is.

  40. DONNA SUMMER IS ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME!!!!!!
Come on give Her the props She has worked so hard for .
She can and does rock with the best of them.
    Donna you Rock!!!!!!

  41. Where the HELL is T.REX ? ? (besides mostly under the soil…).
    And Slade,and Alex Harvey Band…
