Tears For Fears’ “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” turns 25 today

By Carol Anne Szel

“Everybody Rules The World” hit #1, get this … 25 years ago today.  Yes, I’ll pause for a minute while we all recoup after feeling old, while remembering the tune playing in constant rotation on radio — also, showing every hour-on-the-hour at the 1980s music headquarters which in the olden days was (now nearly music-free) music outlet called MTV.

Tears For Fears went five-times Platinum with their album “Songs From the Big Chair” in 1985 which spawned “Everybody Rules The World” along with their inimitably anthemic tune, “Shout.”

Following  four years later in 1989, this punk-meets-soul-meets-rock band released their Platinum album “The Seeds Of Love,” boasting the single of the same name, and a few years later their Greatest Hits which sold in excess of two million discs.

For those of us who have these Tears For Fears tunes etched in our memories, blasting on the radio from our first car in high school, or glued in front of the Top 20 Video Countdown each afternoon, the parting of founders Curtis Smith and Roland Orzabel  will soon be rectified by a Tears For Fears tour this summer.

I’ll be there to remember the times when I dialed in to the Countdown, sat in front of that TV to see what number my favorites made it to on the MTV list, and recall the days of summer when life was easier, the bands were more … well, just more.  And to re-visit a show of talented musicians with not much of a musical agenda other than to have a crowd on their feet singing every word to the hit tunes they recall so well.
