Goldmine Giveaway: Deluxe CD editions of three Kinks albums

One of the most important and influential artists in rock history, The Kinks have been credited by many as the crucial Sixties genesis for everything from heavy metal to garage punk to Britpop. Now the first three albums from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group will be issued in two-CD Deluxe Editions from UMe on April 19, 2011. For the first time, the packages for “Kinks,” “Kinda Kinks” and “The Kink Kontroversy” bring together the original LPs with contemporaneous EPs, BBC performances and alternate, mono, demo and single versions, all remastered from the original tapes.

And Goldmine will be giving away Deluxe CD editions of all three Kinks albums. Today, some opine that The Kinks were instrumental in turning rock ‘n’ roll into rock. Thanks to the added material on their first three albums, and with more Deluxe Editions coming in the near future, that evolution has never been more audible.

Each week, until May 18, Goldmine will give away FIVE SETS of CD-Deluxe Editions The Kinks’ first three albums. So how can you snag one of these goodies, courtesy of Universal Music? It’s easy!

  2. Dave Davies ‘ripping a speaker to make heavy metal thunder for everybody before anybody = You Really Got Me!

  3. I was a nine year old girl in a small town in Kentucky when I heard the first notes from “You Really Got Me” and at that moment the Kinks “got me”! It helped that I grew up in a large music-loving family and when the Brits reached us via AM radio and occasional appearances on Ed Sullivan we were hooked. Went off to college in the mid 70s with my vinyl collection and Muswell Hillbilly at the top of the play list. Always loved them; always felt their music was timeless and inspiring. Recently discovered some of Ray Davies: The Storyteller and Other People’s Lives and fell in love all over again. Now I need to hear everything they ever recorded. Please help!

  4. I already bought these and they sound fantastic. The mastering is top notch and not brickwalled. I want to win these so I can give to a friend and turn them on to the Kinks and help spread the word of this vastly underrated band and catalog.

  5. the last time I saw Dave Davies play live I realized that one reason he is so great is that I have never seen another guitarist play so effortlessly-he makes you believe that anyone could do what he does!

  6. I’ve heard some songs, not all.Would like to win to be able to hear songs I haven’t heard before.

  7. Amazing to think a British band, that hardly ever played the States could have left such a mark on teenagers, old & young. Even though they competed alongside some of the greatest song writers of all-time, few can deny the guinus found in Waterloo Sunset, Til The End of The Day, Celluloid Heroes,,, Lucky for me I saw them in 1980 and will always savior that evening; Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa. They are all things English, what an impression they left on their homeland and left on Victoria.

  8. Ray Davies created his own voice, particularly as a composer, spanning the spectrum from very basic wild rock (You Really Got Me) to his to the point descriptions of everyday English life (Sunny Afternoon).

  9. I have been out of work for two years and love the Kinks..I was front row for their last show here in the States at the Hampton Casino in N.H. I still have many original vinyl copies but would like to be able to hear these. You can also here me on the “On The Road” live album Providence and Lowell..Thanks.

  10. This Kinks album, their first, has all the requirements of an amazing debut. Crunchy guitar, the snap of the snare, and the overall garage sound of the vocals. An album with Stop Your Sobbing can’t be beat!

  11. I’m an absolute Kinks nut. I have to have a copy of this CD. Pleeeeeease send one to me! Thanks.

  12. As a vinyl collector, I have their first albums and ‘State of Confusion’ with the “Come Dancing” single as well. (My favorite song of theirs.) Anyhow, a clean copy of early Kinks hits would be nice.

  13. I was a late blooming Kinks fan, and then discovered the great albums and singles they did in the sixties afterwards. An older sibling only had their “Kinks-Size” album, so I really didn’t fully grasp their prolific output. I’m glad I did; wound up seeing the band twice in concert, and the set lists and cool requests flung up on stage on paper plates were a joy to behold!

  14. So many musical artists (for example Van Halen) covered The Kinks songs. The Kinks style of playing can be heard in bands of past and present. They rock! 🙂

  15. I would like to win this because the MONO version I bought in 1965 is kind of wearing out. The cover is in a “record frame” & the LP is filed w/my other KINKS albums under “K”. I first saw them “live” in 1970 (w/Nicky Hopkins on piano) & then again in 1971. They, amazingly, still wore their 1964 “uniforms” & remain one of the BEST bands I ever saw!

  16. The Kinks did not get a lot of airplay in Boston in the early & mid sixties, on WBZ and WRKO anyways. The first time I heard “All Day and All of the Night” it was already an oldie. “Lola” got heavy airplay on all the FM stations. I still have the vinyl, maybe I’ll upgrade to CD’s.

  17. The Kinks have all been through the mill over the years. The Davies have always been on the “cutting edge” for me. I bought and still have 45’s they produced, but I have no lp’s or cd’s from their discography. What a great addition it would make to my 600+ cd collection!

  18. Saw the Kinks at Winterland in S.F. during their Sleepwalkers tour.
Dave Davies took the mic and dedicated You Really Got Me to a local rock critic who had claimed that the solo on the original recording had been done by Jimmy Page and not by Davies. Davies broke off an unreal solo whilst tumbling around the stage. Long live the Kinks!

  19. I have been a HUGE fan of the kinks since the 70’s! Nothing would be finer than to add this gem to my collection. I am a Dedicated follower, and I fashion to get a copy of this!

  20. This LP was originally mixed and released in MONO only. Kinks fans (like myself) will be in for a real treat to hear this gem as it was originally intended in remastered mono and as an expanded CD to boot. Win-win. You can’t beat that. Long overdue.

  21. This album launched one of the British Invasions heavy weight bands of 1964!!! Originally, named “The Ravens”, then later changed their name to “The Kinks””!!!! A true classic with the original line up!!! “A MUST” for anyone that’s truly a fan of the 1964 British Invasion, Classic Rock, or simply, just GREAT music!!!!

  22. Pete Townshend has said that Ray Davies’ is probably his favorite songwriter of all time. And I’ll second that.

Ray Davies is always “so English”. He truly can take you to a “Waterloo Sunset” or even the other wat to a “Dead End Street”.

Of course, he can offer an open invitation as a Muswell Hillbilly in the Muswell Hill area of North London or offer you membership into Village Green Preservation Society.

    Ray Davies of course can do all of that and therefore I will become a Dedicated Follower of Fashion. Wouldn’t you? :}

    Rick A.

  23. Music has a way of taking us places we want to go – in our memory or good places we want to in our past, with those we had fun with. I want to be that young person I used to be, remember the fun – be a part of it again. Winning will be like a trip to my past.

  24. A five-star album to be sure & one of the all time great debuts. If I win this one, I promise to play it All Day and All of the Night.

  25. I knew about The Kinks mainly through “All Day And All Of The Night” and “Lola” but in my senior year of high school my English teacher really got me listening to their other work piquing my interest by telling me how much the band meant to him and his peers when he was attending university in England. It was the first time I had heard of a band’s music having influence beyond the musical and becoming important on an intellectual level. I never forgot his passion for The Kinks and I’d like to win this package in memory of him and the lasting effect he’s had on me these past 32 years.

  26. I would love to have this collection. The Kinks’ Powerman vs Apeman was the first music I bought as a teen . I bought the 8-Track and played it until I broke the tape. The Kinks music always brings me back to the time of Oh my Lola.

  27. 56 tracks. 56 TRACKS!!!!! If they were all on some form of vinyl, you would get a kink in your back hauling them around! I love the Deluxe Editions of albums that have been coming out for years; I have many of them and really am impressed with them. Open the vaults!!!!

  28. I must admit there is a bit of a hole in my record collection when it comes to The Kinks, even though I play some of there music my band Bird Mancini. All my musical buddies have been on me to get more Kinks music. Looks like this is a good way to do it.

  29. I have these 3 *essential* Kinks CDs, but they are all 20 years old! I’m sure these new editions not only sound much better, but I would LOVE to have these bonus tracks! The Kinks have always been one of my all time favorite bands. Despite being in the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame, I believe they are highly underrated and Ray Davies is without a doubt one of the best songwriters Rock ‘n Roll has ever known!! GOD SAVE THE KINKS!!

  30. This is the beginning of the career of one (or two) of the greatest songwriters of our rock and roll era. Ray Davies defined an era and a country in his Brit-centric songs. Plus, the fact that he and Dave started a genre of music we all love today.

  31. Because i Love the F#@Kin Kinks!!! I strumed Daves guitar from the Crowd at Reunion Arena in Dallas in the 80s and i shook Rays Hand..The Kinks are the Greatest band in R&R, Guitar Riff in You Really got me is the foundation of all R&R Riffs!!! Long Live The KinKs!!!!!!

  32. I’m 63 years old and have purchased EVERY Kink album comercially available in both Mono & Stereo since the release of the the 1st album in 1964. I remember playing it on my battery operated record player while waiting on the school bus. They are all pretty worn out by now though, but still somewhat listenable, and would love to have new mint copies once again to help take me back to my youth.

  33. First, memories of playing a new 45rpm Kinks record as a young rocker in the 60’s. Second, I love Goldmine magazine, it would make my day to have my name posted as winner.

  34. I need these for my collection as Ray & the Kinks are vital to any collection- I love his lyrics and the very british sensibility- this would be PERFECT to listen to in the car this summer

  35. Kan’t Kontrol my Kandid Kraving for more Kinks. Kall me Kink-y, but I’m Kinkda Krazy for the Kinksters. Kome on…Kave in Kick some Kool Kinks my Way.

Ray Davies is best song writer of our generation. You Kan’t do better.

  36. The Kinks opened the kareer of a seminal band and songwriter and kontains the klassics “You Really Got Me” and “Stop Your Sobbing”, as well as the should-have-been-a-hit “I Gotta Move”. Enough said!

  37. There’s a group that’s been around,
since the early sixties from London Town.
You see Ray & the boys are seldom heard.
Of most of their classics you don’t hear a word.
Most folks would rather hear something new.
But let’s give credit to where credit’s due.

  38. This is the best early album by a British Rock and Roll band. Little to no filler Rocks throughout

  39. This is Klassic Kinks!! Who wouldn’t want to own these musical treasures??! Even at this early stage, Ray Davies’ songwriting was exceptional! God Save The Kinks!

  40. I would love to add the first 3 Kinks albums on Deluxe CD Edition to my extensive collection of the best music in the universe.

  41. Because:

    1. I LOVE The Kinks
    1. It’s on my wishlist
    1. I’m broke right now
    1. “I go to sleep” it’s perhaps the most impressive song ever shelved

Yep, that’s right FOUR NUMER ONE REASONS…

  42. The Kinks were one of the best live bands. Their music is great and they put on an excellent show. I wish they would regroup and tour again.

  43. I have been Krazy about the Kinks for over 45 years! I have a large Kollection of Kinks Klassics but would love to add ‘Kinda Kinks’ to my Kollection! God Save The Kinks!!

  44. I’ve been a Kinks fan since way back–I mean the late 60’s, when I first heard their songs as a kid, up to the 70’s, when I bought their albums as a teenager. Somehow the first albums eluded me, so I never had the first three. Knowing they’ve been reissued, and as deluxe versions, no less–very exciting!!

  45. Anyone would be lucky to own one of these Kinks musical treasures. Especially someone who grew up listening to them and recalling memories during these memorable days!

  46. I had a girlfriend back in 71 at Bard college who owned every Kinks album made, I fell in love with them then and still am. My extensive collection disapeared when someone decided that they needed them more than me.Love to win these three.

  47. Who’ll be the next in line to win? This I know, wish it were me! Come on now, I’m tired of waiting, pick me to win! God Save the Kinks!

  48. The Kinks, live presentation could NEVER be captured on tape. The energy was unbelievable! GREAT SHOW!! Albums and CD’s never reflected this bands’ OUTSTANDING show!!!

  49. Live my life every day with the Kinks. Just can’t get enough of them.
What ever problem you have in life, there’s a Kinks song that will
solve it. God Save The Kinks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  50. I love the KINKS & have VINYL. Never gota chance to get CDS
as most were available as IMPORTS & DIDNT have the EXTENSIVE BONUS TRACKS that are on the REISSUES.

  51. I certainly want to win the new De-luxe editions of The Kinks.
It’s quite simple: Rock & Roll has backbone. The Beatles may account for 4-vertabra, The Rolling Stones maybe as many as 3, but The Kinks certainly hold their 2,…with The Sex Pistols being the tip of the talebone!

    “Quit whinnin’, and Subscribe!”.

  52. Ray Davies was as perfect a chronicler of Britain in the ’60’s as any poet of the time. And these 3 Cd’s are the first evidence of just how great a songsmith he was going to be. Gotta own these!!

  53. I have invested my money and the majority of my soul into into the previous “deluxe edition” that came out a few years. I feel if anhyone should get a free “New Deluxe Editions” to see how thw other half lives. Now I got stop those nasty Georgia Tech payments for my daughter, buy hey she’ll get over it, right? She might forgive me maybe even tonight as I listen to Percy for the 25th time,,God knows I need More,,,,GOTTA HAVE MORE,,,MUST GET KINKY!!! MUST CONTINUE MY ROCK ‘N’ROLL FANTASY with LOLA AND THE APEMAN oh God I wish I could buy like Superman….

  54. Love the kinks had em all and someone wanted them more than me. I hate low lifes. Would love to replace them.

  55. “Kinda Kinks” was and is just a great Rock and Roll album. What other reasons could I come up with other than that they are no longer in my collection cause some low life stole my collection about 20 years ago and I never found this one to replace.

  56. I got to see the m live…what a show…and great music through the decades

  57. You Really Got Me All Day and All of the Night. A Well Respected Man and Dedicated Follower of Fashion, I am Free Sittin’ on My Sofa When I See That Girl of Mine. People Take Pictures of Each Other on the Village Green. Do You Remember Walter? You Can’t Win. (But I would love to. Who doesn’t need to get more Kinky)

  58. Why the Kinks?
    They’re underrated, they’re often hated.
Most people feel they’re very out-dated.
They even believe their music’s a bore.
But I, myself, find them hard to ignore!

  59. the Kinks deluxe CD giveaway is a great way to place some of the best music ever written – and never sufficiently heard – into the hands of someone who can truly appreciate it … me!

  60. I remember as a young boy seeing the Kinks perform “You really Got Me” at a shopping center in the Sacramento, CA. area. I would like to win the album because I’m a Kinks fan. Thanks.

  61. I have been a Kinks fan since the 70’s. To me they are the epitomy of English rock. This album is a perfect example of how Ray can look at everyday situations and turn them into endearing rock ballads. I would love to win this extended version!

  62. “Kink Kontroversy” is the transitional album between their 1st golden “hard rock” era and the upcoming “social commentary” era (heralded by “Face to Face”). “Dedicated Follower of Fashion” and “Well Respected Man’ signal the evolution of Ray’s writing style and clearly show that he (and Dave) were much more than three chord wonders. A great album made even better with the bonus disc.

  63. I’ve refrained from trying to win the previous two albums because this is the one I really want. It points the way to the glorious period ahead for my favorite band of the ’60s. Some of their finest moments are here!

  64. I have always loved the Kinks music and I also love Goldmine magazine! So, participating in a Goldmine giveaway to win any Kinks CD makes me feel good! Even if I don’t win I like supporting Goldmine!

  65. So many reasons to love the Kinks. Ray Davies is one of the best singer-songwriters to date, and I have always believed that the Kinks music was under-appreciated. Even in this early music, when they were just teens, their music was so relevant and continues to be timeless. God Save the Kinks!!!

  66. I want to win these albums. I remember listening to the Kinks’ Kinks and Kinda Kinks during my carefree youth. Sadly those albums disappeared with my youth. It would be great to listen to these albums again.

  67. The Kinks have always been a fave….Part of the British Invasion, but oh so different than the rest….intelligent, witty and rockin’ – who would not want a piece of this !!

  68. Tsk…CD reissues? It’s all about viny these days no? Sonic Youth! Dya hear? This is some sexy, sensuous, innocent lost kind of sound that you can now see spinning extremely provacatively on your turntable. FYI is sort of my hero. They got the replacements, too! That kinda heat oughta melt that chilly minnesota snow.

  69. i may not be jack jack the idiot dunce and i do not have ducks on the wall but i sure could use some old good time rock and roll to help get out the kinks in this down economy bloak.
went thru a major kinks stage in my early 20s lets do it again
    thx mark

  70. The Kinks are my fourth favorite band behind the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and the Who. Gotta have the re-issues!

  71. I am a loyal Kinks fan and deserve to win these great reissues because I stayed with them & put up with the less than stellar 80’s stuff that they put out. A true fan never gives up, just learns to hide the ugly ones.

  72. It’s the Kinks! The band that invented fuzztone, fer cryin’ out loud. That’s why I want these albums–plus, the new editions have more songs than ever! Gimme the fuzz, jack! Lemme win!

  73. The Kinks are a great example of the British Invasion. With great singles like “You Really Got Me”, you really got to love the Kinks!

  74. The Kinks are 1 of my favorite band first the Beatles, Kinks,Hollies,Queen…a big pity didnt watch them live…or visiting my country(Argentina)…at last as promo gig…

  75. This is the only website that I know that offers music CD/DVD collections of the greatest artists of pop, rock’n’roll, etc as contests and giveaways.

  76. The Kinks are a band that plays some classic Rock and Roll. I dig their music and I can always hope that Reprise or maybe Sundazed will release their first five American Albums on both vinyl and on compact disc. That would be groovy. I would like to see them all released in stereo which I like. “You Really Got Me”,”All Day and All of the Night”, “Tired of Waiting For You”, “Set Me Free”, “A Well Respected Man”, “Who’ll Be the Next In Line”, “See My Friends”, “I Need You”, and “Till The End Of The Day” never sounded any better in true stereo once you hear it in stereo.

  77. I’m Not Like Everyone Else. I’m A Well Respected Man. Everybody’s Gonna Be Happy. Take Till The End Of The Day. Come On Now…Before It’s Too Late. I Will Love You Forever

  78. I grew up with the Kinks, had the albums and then lost them all to theft! I would love to hear these songs again, and share this all with my grandchildren. To Teach them were the Rock n’ Roll came from. To teach them to appreciate where I came from.

  79. I sure wish I had known bout this earlier. I only found out today when I rec’d mt August issue in the mail. Maybe next time.
