Beatles butcher cover, tapes, signed photo and more available at Mastro auction

A Beatles first-state butcher cover, tapes, signed publicity photo and more are among the highlights of Mastro Auctions’ Connoisseur Auction, which closes Aug. 29, 2008.

Here’s the scoop on some of the auction’s keynote lots:

The Beatles, Yesterday and Today mono LP butcher cover (first state, Good condition)

With the release of their 10th album, Yesterday and Today (Capitol T-2553) in 1966, the Fab Four came up with an idea to dress in butcher’s white smocks with parts from a couple of dismembered baby dolls and some raw meat—their "stab" at pop art satire.

This first state cover is offered with its original vinyl. The record is in Near Mint condition (some slight surface scratches). The label is in Mint condition and is slightly off center (more so on Side 1 than Side 2). The inside sleeve is original to the album and is in Fair condition; it has bottom and side tears and a tear at the top right hand corner.

Rated in Good condition, the butcher cover has some corner mash, slight edge wear, buffing on the back (from the record) and some fade.

When disc jockeys received the original design of the album (before it was put out for distribution), many were shocked by the jacket picture, and some refused to play it.
Capitol Records had already begun mass production of the cover when the chairman of EMI Records Worldwide objected to the cover art and ordered it to be replaced. The jackets and covers were supposed to be destroyed, but some were kept. Most of the "T" series serial numbers were either pasted over with a new photo cover or peeled off and reused for the new cover.

Minimum bid:
$3,000.

Beatles tape lot

As the Fab Four made their way across the United States in what was their last North American tour, they took a quick detour to Toronto’s Maple Leaf Gardens for an Aug. 17, 1966, concert.

Among the 16,000 or so fans in attendance that day was a corporate attorney from Ontario, who packed his family and a battery operated, UHER 4000 REPORT-L reel-to-reel tape machine to watch … and record … the last appearance of John, Paul, George and Ringo in Canada. This amateur recording — a previously unknown audio example of the Toronto show — features a 2 hour, 20 minute d
