Grapevine: Rare Apple records sold on eBay, Living Colour goes on tour and more

Auctions … Several rare unreleased singles from Apple Records were sold in two separate auctions on eBay in late July. The first lot was a promotional pack of four seven-inch singles in a plastic case labeled “Our First Four,” issued to commemorate the launch of the label in 1968. The singles are: The Beatles’ “Hey Jude” (R 5722); Mary Hopkin’s “Those Were The Days” (APPLE 2); Jackie Lomax’s “Sour Milk Sea” (APPLE 3); and Black Dyke Mills Band’s “Thingumybob” (APPLE 4). The set sold for £7,877 (approximately U.S. $12,929). The other auction was for an unreleased Brute Force single: “King Of Fuh”/“Nobody Knows” (APPLE 8), which sold for £4,888 (U.S. $8,023) …
Concerts & Tours … Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band have added 25 new U.S. concert dates from Aug. 19 through Nov. 15 to their 2009 “Workin’ On a Dream” tour … Living Colour have announced North American tour dates in support of their new album The Chair In The Doorway, which releases Sept. 15. Their 28-date run will be bookended by performances at The Highline Ballroom in New York City, as they appear Aug. 10 opening for The Roots and then again Oct. 30 for their own headline performance. In between, the band will hit 19 states around the U.S. … The Decemberists have announced fall dates for their “A Short Fazed Hovel” 2009 tour, which features a full performance of their new album The Hazards of Love. The fall tour launches Sept. 20 in Burlington, Vt., and continues through Nov. 19 (www.decemberists.com) … Following up on the release of their new live CD Fortyfied, prog-rockers Nektar will play several concerts in the U.K. and Germany in late August and September to celebrate their 40th anniversary (www.nektarsmusic.com) … ’80s duo Air Supply will be holding an in-store performance and autograph signing at New York City’s J&R Records Aug. 26. The show is free and open to the public (www.jr.com) … The World Wrestling Federation has adopted Aerosmith’s “You Gotta Move” as the official theme song for WWE’s signature summer event SummerSlam. The pay-per-view events airs live Aug. 23 from Staples Center in Los Angeles, just two days after Aerosmith headlines at the same venue.
Festivals … Operation Swan Dive, a festival of skydiving and music, is set to jump Aug. 15 and 16 at SkyDive Pepperell in Pepperell, Mass. The event will benefit Lyrics for Life, a cancer charity founded by Sister Hazel frontman Ken Block. Interested skydivers should visit www.operationswandive.org for more information and to register. A special Saturday-night barbeque and concert by Block, Andrew Hoover and Alexis Babini will take place under the big tent at the Pepperell drop zone, and music fans interested in attending can purchase tickets for $40 in advance on the www.lyricsforlife.org site … San Diego’s Street Scene music festival celebrates its 25th anniversary Aug. 28 and 29. The Black Eyed Peas, M.I.A., Thievery Corporation, Modest Mouse, The Dead Weather and Cake are among the 35 acts performing at this year’s show.
Memorabilia … Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt and Macbeth Footwear collaborated to design the “45 RPM” shoe, on sale, available at www.journeys.com. Dirnt is donating all royalties from sales of the show to Soles4Souls, an international charity which provides free shoes to people in need (www.soles4souls.org) … A New York-based company called Wear Your Music turns used guitar strings donated by more than 150 artists, including Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend and Metallica, into bangle-style bracelets sold with certificate of authenticity. A portion of each sale is donated to charity, with beneficiaries including Carlos Santana’s Milagro Foundation and the Grateful Dead-affiliated Rex Foundation (www.wearyourmusic.org).
New Releases & Reissues … Foreigner will release a new three-disc collection from Rhino Entertainment exclusively at Walmart Sept. 29. The set consists of a CD album of all-new music, a CD album of the band’s original hit recordings and a DVD of the band in concert and a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of their new material. The set will be priced at $12 … Drivin’ N’ Cryin’ will release their first record in 12 years. Great American Bubble Factory will be released Sept. 29 on Vintage Earth Music. The current DNC lineup is: Kevn Kinney (guitar, vocals), Tim Nielsen (bass, mandolin, backing vocals), Mac Carter (guitar), Dave V. Johnson (drums, percussion, backing vocals). The band will be on tour throughout the fall … Mama Cass Elliot’s long-lost special, “The Mama Cass Television Program,” grooves onto DVD Aug. 25 from Infinity Entertainment Group. Taped as a pilot for a TV variety series and aired as a colorful 1969 ABC special, the show features Joni Mitchell, John Sebastian and Mary Travers joining Cass for a sing-along, and Buddy Hackett, Martin Landau and Barbara Bain in comedy sketches … “Woodstock Diary 1969: Friday Saturday Sunday” will be released on DVD Sept. 22 by MVD Visual. The show, featuring live footage of many of the bands and performers who appeared, is a “fly on the wall” documentary examining the creation of Woodstock and of the actual three-day event itself. “Woodstock Diary” includes appearances by The Who, Janis Joplin, Arlo Guthrie, Richie Havens and more … Musical instrument and audio equipment retailer Guitar Center has released a compilation CD called Fresh Cuts Vol. 4, which features a track by Weezer, “Everybody Go Away,” as well as 17 additional tracks showcasing music by Guitar Center employees, selected by Weezer. The CD is available for free from Guitar Center while supplies last … Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. has announced it has secured licensed music by the Jackson 5 from Universal Music Enterprises to be featured in “Karaoke Revolution” for the Wii, the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. Players will be able to sing to original music of Jackson 5 classics, including the number-one hits “I’ll Be There,” and “ABC.”
