Podcast guest Norm Harris, owner of Los Angeles’ famous Norman’s Rare Guitars, discusses why he is auctioning off parts of his collection of Tom Petty guitars and memorabilia this month via Heritage Auctions (You can bid on items online now; July 31 will be the live auction).

Petty and Harris were friends for decades, ever since Petty started the bands Mudcrutch and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers in the 1970s. Via auction, Harris is offering, for instance, Tom Petty’s 1965 Gibson SG Electric Guitar (shown above) the one he played during his tour with Bob Dylan. This is a highlight of the auction and expected to bring in an estimated $300,000. It is the first guitar owned by Petty to be offered since his death and will be sold with Petty’s iconic top hat (also shown above). Partial proceeds will support Petty’s favorite charities, The Midnight Mission and The Tazzy Animal Rescue Fund.

Norm Harris will also discuss his long friendship with Petty in detail and how they traded guitars and other keepsakes over the decades.
