Noel Gallagher wows rowdy crowd at NYC’s Beacon Theatre

By John Curley

Noel Gallagher took the stage at the first of two shows at New York City’s Beacon Theatre on Monday, November 14th to thunderous cheers from the packed house. And the cheers never really stopped. Gallagher seemed to bask in the adulation, and appeared to be in a really good mood. He spoke to the crowd often, and had a running dialogue with several members of the audience throughout the show.

Gallagher’s album, the self-titled Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, was released in America only last week, so the crowd was not overly familiar with the new material. And that was kind of a shame, because the album contains quite a few standout tracks. The new songs “The Death Of You And Me,” “Soldier Boys And Jesus Freaks,” and “AKA…What A Life!” sounded particularly good when given a live airing. Gallagher also performed one song—“Freaky Teeth”—from his forthcoming collaboration with Amorphous Androgynous.

But it was the material from Gallagher’s days as the major domo in Oasis that received the biggest reactions from the very rowdy audience. “Wonderwall,” “Supersonic,” “Talk Tonight,” and “Half The World Away” all received huge cheers. It was the last song of the encore—“Don’t Look Back In Anger”—that got the biggest reaction of the night. The crowd was up on their feet, singing the song at the top of their lungs to Gallagher’s seeming delight.

Gallagher played electric and acoustic guitar during the concert. His very talented four-piece backing band features David McDonnell on guitar, Russell Pritchard on bass, Mikey Rowe on keyboards, and Jeremy Stacey on drums. Gallagher’s 90 minutes on stage included a 17-song main set and a three-song encore.

Opening the proceedings on the night were the four-piece English band The Hours. Their 40-minute set, which featured a terrific version of “Ali In The Jungle,” got a nice reaction from the crowd.

Noel Gallagher’s set list was as follows:
