A group of 50 never-before-seen pieces of production artwork from The Beatles' "Yellow Submarine" animated film will hit the auction block this month.
The items are featured in Heritage Auctions' Animation Art Signature Auction. The event will be broken into two sessions: A Signature Floor Session that starts at noon CT Nov. 20, 2013, and a Signature Internet Session that begins at 1 p.m. CT Nov. 24, 2013.
Among the highlights of the Floor Session is a rare, hand-painted color model cel that shows all depictions of all four Beatles characters together. It focuses on color information for the band members' "everyday" outfits — as well as special instructions for Ringo's numerous rings. The 13.75-by-10 inch artwork, which is in Excellent condition, is expected to bring at least $12,000 at auction.
Other cels being offered include depictions of The Beatles (both together and individually), as well as movie characters including The Flying Glove, Blue Meanies, Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, Old Fred, Snapping Turk, Biting Fish and Pepperland residents. Rare original Letraset Yellow Submarine stickers used in the production process also are being offered at auction.
Animation items for other musical acts also are part of the auction. They include pieces of art from Pink Floyd's "The Wall" animated feature film (one of the marching hammers turning into a megaphone, the schoolmaster, the machine gun and the judge); Rankin-Bass cels from the "Jackson 5ive" cartoon series (including one featuring an animated Diana Ross); and several signed production cels and notes from "The Beach Boys Cartoon Show" (Pantomime Pictures, 1970).
The auction is dominated by animation art, sketches, photographs, movie posters and model statues for Walt Disney productions including "Dumbo," "Bambi," "Cinderell," "Pinocchio," "Alice In Wonderland," "Peter Pan," "Lady and The Tramp," "Sleeping Beauty," "Robin Hood," "the Aristocats," "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," "The Little Mermaid," "The Lion King," "Beauty and The Beast," "The Tigger Movie" and "Fantasia."
Other lots feature characters from Dr. Seuss' "Horton Hears A Who," "Green Eggs and Ham Day" and "How The Grinch Stole Christmas;" Hanna-Barbera's "The Flintstones," "Huckleberry Hound," "Magilla Gorilla," "Jonny Quest," "Banana Splits," "Hong Kong Phooey" and "Scooby Doo;" the Peanuts series of animated specials; Warner Bros.' Looney Tunes character Bugs Bunny, Wile E. Coyote, Road Runner, Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck, Yosemite Sam; MGM's "Tom and Jerry;" "The Simpsons;" "Woody Woodpecker;"
