Record Store Recon checks out The Groove in Nashville, Tenn.

Armed with his want list and his wallet, Goldmine's Dr. Disc is shopping his way through independent record shops. This edition: The Groove in Nashville.

By Dr. Disc

Goldmine’s secret shopper — who will be known to you only as Dr. Disc — travels extensively and loves to visit record shops during those trips.

An avid collector and music lover, the good Doc scopes out shops near and far and grades them on a scale of 1 to 10 in each of five different categories: Stock, Staff, Store, Selection and anything deserving of Special Mention. In this edition of Record Store Recon, Doc pays a visit to The Groove in Nashville.

STOCK: This store contains a little of everything, like T-shirts, posters and original works from local artists. The Groove stocks DVDs, CDs and both new and used vinyl records. Additionally, the shop sells tickets to local concerts.

STAFF: The staff not only takes the time to look up titles on the computer inventory, but members are happy to come out from behind the counter and dig through the bins to help you find what you are searching for. I have never been at the shop when there are more than two staff members there. Due to the size of the shop, the employee coverage is very good. Additionally, the staff members know their music and know about the special releases coming out.

STORE: This store is a great use of space, because it is now located in what was once a single-family home. The store is clean and very well organized. You can expect to find great music playing throughout the house.

SELECTION: You will find every style of music possible, but due to the size limitations, The Groove is limited as to what it can feature in each section. The shop has a great selection of local artists. The prices are very good, and I have been able to find special selections at different times, but the sections for the most common and popular bands are usually picked through and empty.

SPECIAL MENTION: When people talk Nashville record shops, you will hear them most likely talking about Grimey’s or Third Man, but The Groove needs to be part of the mix: Some of the best prices in town and a good selection. The Groove participates in Record Store Day and Black Friday. On RSD, you can find live music all day on the store’s small stage, as well as in the back yard.
