Mother’s is a nice throwback to the record stores of the ‘60s and ‘70s.

STOCK: Mother’s is a throwback to the record stores of the ‘60s and ‘70s. Part record store, part head shop. You can find new and used records and CDs, tapestries, hats, shirts, pipes, papers, Grateful Dead merchandise — and they were the first store in Minnesota and the Dakotas to have a black light room. I found their prices to be all over the board, $8 for a copy of “Best of Bread,” but then $10 for a Beatles “Magical Mystery Tour.” If you look you can find some good deals. They also have a large selection of 94-cent CDs.

STAFF: On my visit I had the opportunity to meet the original owner of the store, who was behind the counter. The store is currently owned by his son, Brady. Dan was happy to share with me the history of the store and talk about the local music scene.

STORE: You can smell the magic of the store when you walk in. That sums it up. It’s clean and packed to the gills with everything music-related you would like.

SELECTION: Good selection on most styles of music: blues, rock, jazz, metal... just to list a few. Deals can be found if you are willing to dig deep. The store stocks local bands’ music, too.

SPECIAL MENTION: The store participates in Record Store Day and draws a pretty big crowd. At certain times they have acoustic performances in the store.
