The debut album by 7 Walkers, a band featuring Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann, is due Nov. 2 on Response Records.
The band’s self-titled disc is being described as an open letter to the city of New Orleans, and for good reason. Shreveport, La.-raised guitarist Papa Mali has ties to the city, and so does bassist George Porter Jr., who has played with The Meters.
Kreutzmann, whose mother was born in New Orleans, says he’s always had “a real feeling” for the city’s music, “and I get along with the folks down there really well.”
Rounding out the band is multi-instrumentalist Matt Hubbard. Nearly all of the songs on the album were written by Mali and longtime Dead lyricist Robert Hunter. Willie Nelson makes a guest appearance on the song “King Cotton Blues.”
Look for 7 Walkers on tour from early October through late December, making stops in San Diego (Oct. 26), Philadelphia (Dec. 18) and New York (Dec. 19), among other cities.
