These were the top-selling records on eBay during the month of December 2021.

1. Coldplay

“Champion of the World”/ “Cry Cry Cry”

Parlophone/Third Man (U.K.) (number unknown)

Condition: M-/M-

Sold for: $15,601.48

In November, in honor of what would have been the birthday of Scott Hutchison – who killed himself in May 2018, the charity created to honor him held a fundraising event in Glasgow. For that event, Coldplay pressed the only copy of this single, on two-color vinyl, and donated it to the event for auction. All proceeds from the sale went to the mental-health charity.

2. Magnetics

“Lady in Green”/ “Heart You’re Made of Stone”

Bonnie ZTSC-107374/5

Condition: VG with crack

Sold for: $7,000.00

This is the eighth copy of this 1966 single to come up for sale. Genuine copies of this record have stamped matrix numbers from Columbia Custom Records. To date, no Near Mint condition copies have appeared on the market, and with this price for a cracked one, everyone who collects Detroit soul ought to check their collections.

3. John Lennon and Yoko Ono

“Happy Xmas”/-

EMI (Abbey Road Studios) no number

Acetate #47 out of 50

Condition: M-/M-

Sold for: $6,647.59

Alex Wharton, who engineered the 2020 “ultimate mix” of the song, cut 50 (numbered) acetates on the lathe at Abbey Road. Twenty-five of the acetates were given to charities, and the other 25 went to shops in the United Kingdom. This release marked the 50th anniversary of the original single.

4. The Rolling Stones

Promotional Album

Decca (UK) RSM-1

Condition: VG/VG+

Sold for: $6,550.00

Decca pressed 200 copies of this retrospective album for distribution to radio stations across the U.K. This is the scarcer (British) version of the album known in America as The Rolling Stones. For a Stones collector, this is one of the most sought-after vinyl releases.

5. Sex Pistols

“Anarchy in the UK” / “I Wanna Be Me”

EMI (NZ) 2566

Red and tan label

Condition: NM

Sold for: $6,342.34

Early Sex Pistols discs are best known from the U.K, but collectors snap up copies of this single from New Zealand whenever they appear for sale. EMI famously let the band go before their most rapid increase in popularity, making this one quite hard to find.
