These were the top-selling records on eBay during the month of August 2022.

1. Bob Dylan

The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan

Columbia CL-1986

Plays the four deleted tracks

Condition: G/G+

Sold for: $9,000.00

In July 1963, as Columbia Records was preparing to release Bob Dylan’s second album, the artist was still working on the sequencing. With the pressing plants already at work, Bob chose to replace four of the songs. Columbia added a few changes to the back-cover notes, replaced the titles on the front cover slick, and ordered new labels. Within a few days, they were pressing copies of the new version of the album, although they wound up pushing back its release date slightly. At least one pressing plant seems to have accidentally and briefly used stampers with the deleted tracks, resulting very few rare copies of the album getting out with the four withdrawn songs. The cover and label list the new songs, but the matrix numbers ending in -1A show that this copy is one of a few that contains the original songs. Although the condition of this copy was below the usual grade for a collectible, this album is so rare and in-demand that it commanded a high price.

2. Leonid Kogan and Elisabeth Gilels

Sonatas for Two Violins

Columbia (UK) SAX-2531

Turquoise labels

Condition: VG(+)/NM-

Sold for: $7,316.91

Another great-looking, great-sounding copy of this classic violin album emerged on the market this month, selling for a respectable price.

3. Hank Mobley

Hank Mobley

Blue Note BLP-1568

Blue/White mismatched labels

Condition: VG/VG+

Sold for: $7,150.00

We always look for this album on the market. This month, one original copy turned up in nice condition. As usual, it caught the attention of a lucky buyer.

4. Misfits

Earth AD/Wolf’s Blood

Plan 9 PL9-02

Condition: VG++/VG++

Sold for: $6,600.00

Misfits’ second American album, and the last to be recorded with Glenn Danzig on vocals, came out in several colors back in 1983. This is one of the 200 copies of the record that came out on purple vinyl.

5. Blind Willie McTell

“Three Women Blues”/ “Statesboro Blues”

Victor V-38001

Condition: about VG

Sold for: $6,110.00

After a low-grade copy sold last month for $6,000, this copy of the 1929 pre-war classic surfaced. We continue to hope that a high-grade copy appears on the market soon.
