1. The Beatles

Introducing the Beatles

Vee Jay SR-1062

Ad-back cover

Condition: VG(+)/VG+

Sold for: $8,000.00

This copy is a Monarch (west-coast) pressing of the stereo album in its original cover. When Vee-Jay rushed out the album in January 1964 – to get ahead of Capitol – they had not designed back-cover graphics. As a result, they used the advertising design from their inner sleeves. Just over 1000 stereo copies of the album were pressed, and who knows how many are still in nice condition? This was a great buy for someone.

2. The Tokens

Intercourse

BT Puppy BTPS-1027

Condition: M-/M-

Sold for: $7,950.00

After contracting with RCA Victor to press one single in 1970, the BT Puppy label essentially closed up shop. They released an album by Brute force in spring that year, followed by four more albums in September, but after that, they stopped advertising. Albums numbered before this one were prepared in 1970 and released as late as spring 1971, even though the album had been recorded quite a bit earlier. The matrix number for this album shows that it was prepared in 1971, but its release date remains unknown. Reportedly, BT Puppy continued to press albums for contractual purposes, and only about 200 copies of this album were ever released. The album sold to someone who could appreciate its rarity.

3. Tina Brooks

True Blue

Blue Note BLP-4041

Condition: VG++/VG++

Sold for: $7,659.79

What could be a better complement to this month’s top auctions than a Blue Note album from late 1960? This fine example was pressed by Plastylite, as early releases on the label were. Harold Floyd (“Tina”) Brooks’ career was short-lived, and this was his only performance as a leader to be released during his lifetime.

4. Georges Enesco

Plays Bach Sonatas

Continental CLP-104/106

Condition: VG/VG+/VG+

Sold for: $7,700.00

Online sellers consider this to be one of the rarest and most sought-after early classical LPs. Enesco recorded his violin in 1949, and it was released a year later on the Continental label. So far, this is the highest-selling copy of the album on eBay.

5. Johanna Martzy & Jean Antonietti

Schubert: Complete Violin Works (collection of 3 LPs)

Columbia (UK) 33CX-1359, 33CX-1372, 33CX-1399

Blue label with gold print

Condition: approximately VG+/VG+ (all)

Sold for: $7,338.00

Martzy’s Bach set sold twice in 2020, each time to high hammer prices. Now, along comes her set of Schubert recordings, and they likewise attracted a great deal of attention. After 46 bids from quite a few distinct bidders, the price settled down at what you see here. According to online reviews, it is these (her Schubert recordings) that are particularly prized by listener-collectors. One hopes that a copy in NM condition will surface soon.
