Goldmine's Market Watch presents the top-selling records on eBay during the month of January 2022.

1. Yoko Shimomura and Taeyeon

Gran Saga (Original Game Soundtrack)

NPIXEL (South Korea) (number unknown)

Condition: M-/M-

Sold for: $9,999.99

In advance of the release of the Korean video game, Gran Saga, the developer elicited Korean pop singer, Taeyeon, to sing the game’s theme song. For two weeks at the end of October and beginning of November, 2020, NPIXEL took preorders for the game. Buyers who also subscribed to the Gran Saga YouTube page and joined their Naver Café were entered into a raffle to win one of only 500 compact discs of the game soundtrack. In addition, NPIXEL made only a few copies in the vinyl LP format. This is the first vinyl copy to come up for sale.

2. The Beatles and Frank Ifield

The Beatles and Frank Ifield On Stage

Vee-Jay VJLP-1085

Portrait cover

Condition: VG+/VG-

Sold for: $6,589.00

Occasionally, a genuine copy of the rare “portrait cover” to this album makes an appearance on the market. These are second pressings of the album from fall 1964. Since Vee-Jay was only licensed to release Beatles records through mid-October, copies of this album with the second cover are much scarcer than copies having the original (“Jolly What”) cover.

3. The Beatles

The Beatles

Apple SWBO-101

Condition: M-/NM-/NM-

Orange sticker with Apple logo

With pictures, photos, and blue separator sheet

Sold for: $5,555.55

The album, pressed at Capitol’s pressing plant in Scranton and numbered A1440738 on the front cover, is in magnificent condition. However, most of the collector value comes in the form of a rare orange sticker. Since the album cover made no mention of the track listing, Capitol’s distributors sometimes placed contents stickers on the cover itself or on the shrink wrap. There are 11 known stickers, with this being one of the hardest to find.

4. Tommy Dent

“Soul Thing”/ “Miss Woman”

Cobblestone CB-706

Promotional Copy

Condition: VG

Sold for: $5,500.00

Fewer than 10 copies of this promotional single are documented to exist. It is highly sought-after by European collectors of soul music. Cobblestone released the single in August 1968, at which time it attracted no attention. Today, collectors appreciate both the music and the rarity of the record.

5. The Weeknd

XO 21614-1

Number 746 out of 1000

Condition: SS

Sold for: $5,000.00

This six-album fifth-anniversary release came out in an edition that was much more limited than demand for it warranted. Therefore, copies of the pressing sell for high prices. This copy, being “still sealed,” did very well indeed in the market.
