On September 23rd, 1978, New York New Wave band Blondie released their third album Parallel Lines. The album — a perfect blend of post-punk attitude and pop flair — was met with widespread critical and commercial success. It shot to the top of the U.K. charts and became the group’s breakout album in the states, landing at No. 6 on the Billboard 200.

Parallel Lines also contained several hit singles, the biggest of them being “Heart of Glass” — which reached No. 1 in the U.S. and U.K. The song — written by singer Debbie Harry and guitarist Chris Stein — is a groovy, shimmering, Euro-disco influenced new wave jam.

Shortly after Parallel Lines was released, on October 5th, Blondie appeared on The Midnight Special late-night musical show where Harry and Co. delivered a stunning live take on “Heart of Glass.” Watch that riveting performance above, and check out the official "Heart of Glass" music video below.
