Building on the positive reaction to Bill and Laura Pursell’s CD “The Very Last Dance Hall Left in L.A.,” Netcom Music has finally released the 2000-2001 studio recordings of pianist, arranger and composer Bill Pursell, for the soothing 14-song collection “Millennium.” Not only does Laura Pursell’s rich and classy vocal on “Walk on By” capture the essence of Dionne Warwick’s Top 10 hit from 1964, but the arrangement opens with a fluid electric guitar part, drawing on Isaac’s Hayes’ 1969 Top 40 remake. Bill Pursell provides an amazing replication of his 1963 Top 10 piano instrumental “Our Winter Love” as the CD’s opening track.
As the flip side of “Where You Lead” in 1971, Barbra Streisand brought an elegant female delivery to “Since I Fell for You,” a Top 10 hit in 1963 for Lenny Welch. On this rendition, Julia Holland echoes the vocal style and power of both recordings. “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” offers a nice change as a duet with Laura Pursell initially, followed by male vocalist Terry White, when the percussion kicks in.
Over half of the CD is comprised of relaxing piano instrumentals with a full orchestra. “Through the Eyes of Love” has a strong violin part on this theme from the film “Ice Castles,” reminding us of the vocal version by Melissa Manchester in 1979, which was predicted to be the next “You Light Up My Life.” Bill Pursell’s version of that Debby Boone hit is also included, where the listener can enjoy the ¾ time melody from that movie theme. A pair of Bill Pursell’s original compositions are included with “Laura’s Song” and “A Time Remembered,” bringing enough strength to be considered for a movie theme like Burt Bacharach’s “(Theme From) Valley of the Dolls,” a successful flip side for Dionne Warwick.
