“Kerze” (Candle), an oil painting by artist Gerhard Richter, sold for a whopping ?7,972,500 at Sotheby’s recent Contemporary Art Evening auction. The painting’s sale price came in at more than three times the high-end pre-sale estimate of ?2.5 million. Created in 1983, “Kerze” was featured on the cover of Sonic Youth’s watershed Daydream Nation album.
