Steve Cropper of Booker T. and the MG’s fame pays tribute to the revered R&B group The 5 Royales on “Dedicated,” his first album for the 429 Records label.

“Part of getting older and still being able to play and all of that — at a certain point, it becomes about educating the next generation,” says Cropper, who was greatly influenced by 5 Royales guitarist Lowman “Pete” Pauling. “I’ve already had four or five careers, and I’m lucky to be alive. If I can educate these young ears as to where the music started, because they’re always asking, and if I can get them interested in The 5 Royales, I've done something.”

Guests on Cropper’s “Dedicated,” which will be released July 5, include B.B. King, Steve Winwood, Brian May, Sharon Jones, Delbert McClinton and John Popper.
