Joe Strummer: Get Up, Stand Up
Pride DVD (PG2DVD121)
By John Curley
The footage from the November 2002 benefit performance at London’s Acton Town Hall for striking members of the London Fire Brigade at which Joe Strummer and the Mecaleros were joined on stage by Strummer’s old Clash bandmate Mick Jones is alone worth the price of the DVD. They tear through Clash standards “White Riot” and “London’s Burning.” Jones’s comments about that concert are also very interesting.
Fortunately, that footage is not the only reason to purchase the DVD. Interview segments with Jones and fellow Clash bandmate Topper Headon, Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols, and friends, fans, and journalists paint a vivid picture of why Joe Strummer was such an important figure in music during the last quarter of the 20th century.
And then there’s the music. Electrifying performances of Clash songs such as “Tommy Gun,” “Garageland,” “Clash City Rockers,” “Capital Radio,” and “London Calling” are featured.
The DVD, which was originally released under the title Viva Joe Strummer, is accompanied by a CD of interviews with Strummer and The Clash that were done between 1979 and 2001. Among the interviews on the CD are audio clips of the memorable interview that The Clash did with Tom Snyder for NBC-TV’s Tomorrow show in 1981 during their memorable residency at New York City’s Bond’s disco. Also included is the audio from an interview that Strummer and Paul Simonon did with Sue Simmons of New York City’s WNBC-TV in 1982.
Joe Strummer: Get Up, Stand Up is a good companion DVD to go along with other DVDs focusing on Strummer that have been released in recent years, Dick Rude’s Let’s Rock Again and Julien Temple’s The Future Is Unwritten.
This DVD is not authorized by Strummer’s estate. It clocks in at 62 minutes and contains some rude language.
