Regina Spektor

11:11

Sire (2-LP Set)

4 1/2 stars

The 20th anniversary of Regina Spektor’s debut album 11:11 is recognized with the release of a limited-edition box set. Contained in this box set is not only her self-released debut album but also the 2xLP collection of performances titled Papa’s Bootlegs, which includes never before released songs from the 11:11 era. Recorded by Regina’s father, this package also includes a full color booklet with liner notes, reproductions of original flyers, art, doodles and photos.

Listening to 11:11 you will be reminded of how much can be done with just an amazing voice. For those of you not familiar with 11:11, you get Regina, a piano and sometimes a little bass and/or percussion. While this album has a jazz feel to it, it reminds the listener how expansive the term “alternative” can encompass. After 20 years these songs still sound great and pack the punch they did back then. Spector’s talent as a songwriter and a storyteller is indisputable.

It is nice to see the album finally get the vinyl pressing it deserved. A huge recommendation goes out for buying this as soon as you can because if this record is like any of her past records, it will become very difficult to find in record stores.
